Assassin's Creed 4's visuals are mind-blowing, especially considering it's an open-world
game. The texture work is very detailed, and the game has some good shading effects. It's
the water, however, that really steals the show. AC4 Utilizes a new technology called
the sea engine, which creates the most realistic possible water.
Assassin's Creed 4 also features the best writing the series has seen. The story can
be funny when it wants to be, but it will move you at certain points. Edward is a far
more likeable than Connor from AC3, and the story does a far better job than all of the
previous games at making you care about all of its characters.
In Assassin's Creed 4, the series finally gets the gameplay update it so desperately
needed. While the annoying tailing and eavesdropping missions still occur, they take backseat to
the amazing sailing mechanics. Almost half of the game will take place on the open sea,
and every minute of naval combat is great. The ship boarding feature does a great job
of blending naval combat with the traditional on-foot gameplay. Also, there's nothing more
satisfying than successfully boarding a Man of War.
When I completed Assassin's Creed 4's main story, I was fully satisfied (Side note, Black
Flag lets you skip the credits), but the developers packed this game full of meaningful and fun
side content, that kept me playing long after the great ending. I've clocked in nearly 50
hours in Black Flag, and I only have 64% completion. This is the best Assassin's Creed game to
date, and it's definitely worth your money. I give it a 9 out of 10.
