Islam and Muslims
We hear the terms "Islam" and "Muslims" a lot.
Open a newspaper or browse the internet and you'll come across these words in a
variety of subjects. The connection between these words is simple. Islam is a
religion and the followers of that religion are Muslim.
Muslims make up about one quarter of the world's population or around one
point six billion people.
While Muslims are usually associated with the Middle East, only twenty percent are
Arab. More than sixty percent of Muslims are from Asia-Pacific countries.
There are fifty seven Muslim majority countries - the largest being Indonesia.
As with any community, there are good Muslims - and bad ones. Islam, like Judaism
and Christianity, traces its roots back to Abraham. The message of Prophet
Muhammad, peace be upon him, belief in one God and accountability before the
Creator on the Day of Judgment is the same message preached by Prophets before him.
As a religion Islam is very simple. It requires believing in One God and
Muhammad as His final messenger.
The rest of the faith - including the five daily prayers, fasting, charity and
performing the pilgrimage - flows from this one fundamental belief.
Immigrant and native-born Muslims can be found in growing numbers throughout
Western Europe, North America and Australia. Islam's global face is a
reflection of its global message. One human family believing in One Supreme Being.
