Every petrolhead has a dream..
This is what mine looks like:
A nice tunnel, good tarmac and then that one car you just love racing through
For me it's this one.
This is one of my dreamcars, if not the dreamcar
This car has done so much for the industry
especially in it's class, that of the powersedans
It was the first to have a V10
It was the first with a really fast, flappy paddle gearbox
This car is such a legend
I love the way this gearbox kicks you when you shift
Nowadays we have S-Tronic and other double-clutch gearboxes
But this is so much better
When I drive this car
I ask myself, is that the way to go?
Those extremely fast boxes and the "Playstation" feeling
Is that the proper way to go?
I beg to differ..
That amazing sound comes from a 5.0 V10 engine with 507BHP..
..or 500BHP or even 400BHP
it is all adaptable in the iDrive menu
You can change the settings of the ESP, chassis and the gearbox
It is a lot to take in, there are a lot of buttons
Just when you think you found the optimal settings, it surprises you
with a MDM (Mdrive Dynamic Mode) option
and then it changes gear even faster and more furiously
So it is quite an adventure to find the best settings with all these buttons
But this does allow you to bring your mood into the car
From cruising with a nice soft suspension
to a very hardcore car with a gearbox that hits you when you shift
and an engine that feels like it came out of a racing car
It's incredibly that this kind of contrast is possible in one car
When we take a look at the life of the M5
starting with the E39 which was a car with a nice V8
and a good chassis, it handled great
BMW then decided to take a leap
and so they came with the E60
All of a sudden we got a racy V10 engine
that was unheard of in a sedan
Also revolutionary were the gearbox and the adaptability of the entire car
And then came the F10 M5
I have to say it doesn't quite live up to this one
with 2-cylinders less,
turbo's instead of this naturally aspirated beauty
the sound has to be amplified by the in-car stereo
I feel like it is not as genuine as this is
They could have made it a lot more exciting
The appearance is also less pronounced
With this I can spot from half a mile that it's a M5
With the F10, first I have to determine whether it's a 7-, 5-, 3- or 1-series
then I have to discover it's a M5 because the wheel arches are maybe a millimeter wider
So I think they did a better job with the E60
People always say "Never meet your heroes"
That is just what I did today, thanks to Hazet cars (NL)
And I must say, it didn't disappoint!
