Lt. Governor Anthony Brown: Great news. This legislative session we took our first major step forward in
implementing health reform. We are going to improve the quality of care in Maryland,
expand access to health coverage for more Marylanders, while at the same time
reducing the cost of delivering care. And how are we going to do it?
Working with the General Assembly we created the Health Benefits Exchange.
This is where individuals and small businesses, many for the first time,
are going to be able to purchase health insurance. They're gonna be able to
compare health insurance products and make the decision that works for their family
or their businesses. In the last four years we've expanded health care coverage to
260,000 Marylanders who didn't have access to health insurance.
With this new Health Benefits Exchange we're going to be able to reduce, by 50%. the
number of Marylanders without health insurance. While at the same time
saving tax payers $850 million, That's according to independent analysis done
at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County.
We made a major step forward this legislative session in implementing health reform.
