The Circum Grand Orchestra results from the gathering of several musicians from
Lille Area (North of France), twelve years ago already, in the early 2000s.
These musicians constituted several smaller formations,
and we decided to get together
in order to act more efficiently.
That's when we also chose to create an orchestra that would include
all of the musicians in the collective.
After spending 12 years in this collective,
and various projects with
most of its members
that I know very well nowadays
as much on the personal as on the musical level,
I thought it was time for me to compose
a music that truly fits every member of the orchestra.
The starting point of a composition can be
a rhythmic cell,
a rhythmic element, a melody,
a search on
a sound, on a tone,
it can also come from
thinking about one of the musicians in particular,
and then ideas spring.
It all can begin with very small details.
The fact that I know each musician personnally for a very long time enables me to compose the closest music possible to each personality ;
I really care about this new repertoire being
a collective creation,
with a shared search in the way
we develop new pieces.
Regarding the writing ties,
we must cleave to
the personality of the orchestra
to its style,
since in both previous repertoires
one can hear a particular way of writing
composing, and orchestrating.
It felt natural to me to stick with
the tradition of the orchestra
and the previous repertoires,
but in my own approach, obviously,
because this time I'm in charge
and it's inevitably different.
The first concert of this new project will take place on April 30th
at La rose des vents, at the end of a week in residency.
