In the Stargate universe the primary mechanic of the series is the Stargate, a ring shaped
device that allows nearly instantaneous travel between it and another
Stargate via a wormhole. This can be to another planet within the same galaxy, or, if you have enough
power, to another galaxy entirely. But, that's for a later video!
In order to reach another Stargate, like calling a phone, an address consisting of
seven symbols is required to dial another Stargate within the same galaxy. The first six symbols are
the address of the destination gate and the seventh is the point of
origin. Because as Daniel Jackson explains in the original Stargate movie, In order to plot a
course you need to know A) Where you are going, and B) Where you are starting
from.
As a general rule most Stargates come equipped with a DHD or Dial Home Device. This is a
small pedestal device which allows a traveller to enter the address that they
wish to travel to. Like a keypad or a keyboard. The exception to this rule are 'Space Gates' seen
in Stargate Atlantis. These do not come eqipped with their own DHD's and instead rely on the
ships that travel throught them to be equipped with their own built-in DHD's.
And that's it. Stargate in a Nutshell!
