Hello I'm Bruce Zimmerman host the Open Line Garden Show and Certified Horticulturalist
for Rittenhouse.ca. Today we are going to continue our series on Backpack
sprayers with the Birchmeier Backpacks.
Now there are three models.
This is Flox, Iris and Senior.
The difference between the three is only the size of the tank.
So they all have the same feature so let's start with Iris.
I think she is the most practical mainly because I think she's neither too small
nor to large.
Let's start with the handle. Now I like to handle because it threads
in.
That means the clips that are most backpack sprayers
that can get caught in your clothing
or on the bushes and shrubs and trees that you're spraying.
Won't happen.
It also threads into a solid
stainless steel heavy-duty base.
This base is designed one to keep the tank in line
but also so that if you do happen to drop it
it protects the tank.
Let's talk about the tank.
The tank itself is blow molded that means it's smoother on the inside
that means there is less nooks and crannies
for pesticide to get trapped that means it's easier to clean.
Yet it's also is a little smaller more compact that means that it sits
centered
over your back which means it's a little less awkward.
It has a
very wide
adjustable straps
that also helps to make it a little more controllable on your back. Now
what can you use in these.
Well, you can use the
insecticides, fungicides,
and herbicides
that most backpacks will actually use.
But also you can use
stains and chlorines.
Make sure that you do rinse them out well afterwards and after every use
right away. Do not store it with mixed material in any sprayer including these.
When you're filling it's got a very large top
with a screen.
Now you'll start to say okay Bruce but what the heck is this here.
Most people are not used to seeing this. This is usually on the inside of
the tank
and having it on the outside the tank
is the reason that you can have these tanks
a little smaller,
and a little better centered on your back.
This is a piston pump
which actually works at about 80 psi.
Having it on the outside means that it easier to do maintenance and repairs.
Doubtful that you do a lot of repairs on these. They are designed to last and be
very very durable.
But it's right there.
You'll also note that it has a great place to clip on your
handle. Now
I've taken a handle apart
because
Yes you can see the long
and durable hose
but on the inside of the handle is a long filter.
This is longer than most filters in a backpack
and it threads in. Most of them are pressure fit.
The trigger itself locks
but it is also solid steel.
This is heavy-duty brass,
heavy-duty you brass wand
with a
adjustable milled brass tip.
As soon as you pick up this wand, you will know and feel the difference just
because of the weight.
Now operating temperature, operating pressure is 80 psi. The
difference is size right. So what are the sizes.
Two point five US gallons.
Four US gallons
and five US gallons.
Now I also brought a couple other
Birchmeier Sprayers.
Well sort of Birchmeier products. The first one is the Superstar and it really
is. If you're doing a little work around the house
this is an easy to pump
thumb activated trigger
with a pressure release valve.
This is a a solid milled
brass adjustable nozzle
and of course
very practical. Easy to get into places. Particularly small.
It also has an optional
bendable wand.
This again is still solid milled brass
and adjustable.
So this is very practical to have to get into those tight little spots where you
want to go.
Now the last one is actually the Birchmeier
duster. It's not a sprayer.
You pump it up.
It has a heavy-duty hose
which allows you to
not have it plugged up.
OK. It works at forty five psi. It's got a carrying strap and you simply go around
your bushes
and
as you're going along
spra - dust. I almost said spray.
Yes, I almost said spray. I am so used to saying it
And you simply squeeze the trigger. Pressure comes up through
and out comes the dust.
