Fire forces more people to flee homes in Arizona. As 3,000 firefighters continued to battle
the second largest wildfire in Arizona’s history, known as the Wallow Fire, a full
evacuation order was issued for the 8,000 residents of Eagar and Springerville late
on Wednesday, June 8. Some 6,500 residents of Greer also had to leave their homes when
the raging fires forced firefighters to retreat temporarily on Wednesday. As of Thursday evening,
the flames were only five percent contained and had consumed over 386,500 acres. At least
29 homes were destroyed, with over 5,000 others in danger, and up to 11,000 people displaced
in the White Mountains region. Concern was also growing as the blaze threatened to damage
power lines supplying electricity to over a quarter million people in the southwestern
USA, including Texas and New Mexico. US President Barack Obama has called Arizona’s Governor
Jan Brewer to express concern for the local citizens and affirm the government's help.
Conveying her deep love and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai requested that our Association
members please consult with local officials on needed assistance, and to go if possible
to render comfort to the displaced. She also said financial aid would be available as needed.
Our appreciation for the courageous endeavors of all firefighting personnel, as well as
the efforts of the officials. We also thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for her heartfelt
concern. May such destructive situations soon be extinguished through our more conscientious
stewardship of the ecosphere
