In this week’s SEO news, a new Google website that tells us exactly how search works, I’ve
got top tips on keeping your prospects on your site so they buy more, and how you can
get a hold of a consumer guide with the seven top misconceptions about SEO – all in this
week’s SEO news. Following on from Google’s very popular
website of last year where they chronicled the movement of an email from your own computer
to that of your intended recipient, they began to come out with an illustrated website but
this time to showcase how search works. Apart from it being a fantastically very cool
site with some cool scroll functionality, the site is extremely informative. It starts
off by showing just how Google crawl and then index the 30 trillion webpages that now exist
in the internet. It then goes on to show how Google then source and index that information
so that you in return get the best and the most relevant results.
Finally it goes to show how they go through the spam deletion process to make sure those
results do remain relevant and you only get the best possible information returning in
the search engine of Google and that of their search partners. I really do recommend take
two minutes out and have a look at the website. If you get all the way to the end, you’ll
also find a little bit of fun – it will show you exactly how many searches happened
on Google during the time that you’ve spent on the site. Well worth 2 minutes out- go
and check it! One of the two hundred plus but perhaps more
important factors that Google use to determine rank is how long your visitors stay on your
website. The longer people stick around the more relevant Google can see you as being,
because people are really sticking around and enjoying your content.
So what are some of the things that you can do to ensure that people stay on your website
for longer? Now perhaps it goes without saying but of course you want to create damn good
quality content. The better the content on your website the more people are going to
consume it. You also want to make sure that that content
is served up in multiple modalities. What do I mean? I mean use video, use audio, use
text, and use images. Different people like to consume information in different ways and
if you can serve all of those audiences then more people are going to stick around.
Text is possibly becoming less and less used but it still lots of people love to read content
so serving up text, make sure that you make it easy for your users. That means chunking
the copy down so that it’s in 4 or 5-line chunks and that means people can scan through
that content a little bit easier. A few other things that you can do to ensure
that people stay on your site: and the first one is, using a related post plugin, or offer
them ways to find other information that relates to the content that they have just viewed.
If they are interested in that post then perhaps they might be interested in another post of
yours on a similar subject. Also make sure that you keep external links
to an absolute minimum. Don’t encourage people to leave your site, in fact, the only
way that they should be able to leave your site, is to make a purchase. So minimize banners
and minimize external links and you should be getting people sticking around longer by
making sure that your web traffic are optimized by relevant keywords. If you have people finding
your webpages and then when they get to the page they find that really the content on
the page is really not what they are looking for, they’re very likely to click away.
So really the message is- don’t try and gain search engines when it comes to SEO.
Make sure that you optimize your content for relevant keywords that really summarize the
content on that page. Since working on SEO, I have noticed that
several commonly held misconceptions that people have about search engine optimization
that are perhaps causing them to make the wrong decision over provider, or choose tactics
of SEO that really are not advisable. For that reason, I am putting together a consumer
guide that details the top 7 commonly held misconceptions of SEO. We’re just putting
the finishing touches on it right now, and I will let you know as soon as it’s released,
so keep your eyes open for that for the forthcoming days or weeks.
