We've all heard of stretched limos. But what about stretched cruise ships? At this shipyard
in Hamburg a major operation is about to begin- to make the ship 99 feet longer.
The whole process was captured in this time lapse. The Norwegian Crown is towed backwards
into the dock and the work begins.
The ship is split in half and pulled apart.
This is the extra section that's about to fitted in.
The process is slow and careful - a major mechanical and engineering feat that lasts
well into the evening.
And it's not just the size of the ship that changes, but the name as well. After a few
new coats of paint, the Balmoral is ready to set sail. It's relatively common for cruise
ships to be cut and extended to provide more space for cabins and entertainment facilities.
And at a time when even larger more modern ships are sailing the oceans, this gives the
1988 built-Balmoral a new lease of life.
