Mary, you're from El Dorado High school. I am, I am a senior.
And you have just come up and you have said to me that you directed:
"Much Ado High School," by Lindsay Price. Awesome, very good. Excellent play.
Yes it is. And you did it for a senior project?
Yes I did. And you worked with middle school students?
Yes, I casted a group of middle school students for the play. They auditions and I casted
them, and we had about three weeks of rehearsal before the final performance on St. Patrick's
Day-Yay Irish!-And we had a super awesome time. The script was phenomenal. We just had
a really good time, and just, the whole process was just a lot of fun.
What made you decide to use middle school students?
Well, I wanted to really go back to my roots of like elementary-Middle school, and we didn't
have a drama program when I was in middle school there, so the fact that they had a
middle school and drama, I was just like super jazzed, and my old teacher is teaching the
class. So, I'm like, "Okay, I'm going to use my old teacher and her students to put on
this play." That's very cool.
So I was just really excited about it, and they were more than willing to do it, and
I was just amazed by the amount of commitment and dedication to the show, and they were
just phenomenal. So, what were your challenges?
Well, the boys were a little rambunctious at times, for lack of a better word. They
were really good at the very end, though. They just were great. But it was difficult
to get them out of the shell and really think, "You know, we need to make them more theatrical."
And so to get them out of their shell was probably a challenge. And the second challenge
was probably the space that we rehearsed in. It was just, probably a 16 by 18 foot classroom.
We had no stage until the dress rehearsal which was at the school that we performed
it at the final night, and that was the night after that, so.
So they were pretty excited, I'll bet. Oh, they were so excited. I mean, we just
taped off an area to perform in, and said "Hey, this is what your space is; this is
what our stage is."It was perfect. And, just the transition from the classroom to the theatre,
it was flawless, it was amazing how that worked out.
Mary, thank you so much for coming by and telling me about this. I say all the time,
I never get to see productions. So when I come to these festivals, this is when I get
to meet people and hear their experiences. So thank you very much.
Thank you very much, Lindsay. You're welcome. Cool!
