Joby has recently released their newest iteration of it's famous GorillaPod tripod - the Action
Series of tripods and mounts. The GorillaPod Action tripod is specifically designed to
work with the GoPro and other action cameras.
The GorillaPod Action Tripod comes complete with an aluminum ballhead, a quick-release
clip with the standard GoPro mount and a standard 1/4"-20 tripod adapter.
The Action Tripod is about 10" long, making it about 1.5x times longer than the GorillaPod
Original, and about the same length as the GorillaPod SLR-Zoom - with significantly thinner
legs. Although the Original is more compact, the longer legs of the Action give it more
versatility when reaching around whatever object you are mounting it to, providing a
better hold and ultimately securing your camera from loss or damage. The thickness of the
legs makes them slightly less maneuverable than the Original, but this, too, ensures
a better hold in the often unpredictable environment of action photography.
Arguably, the best feature of this tripod, is the integrated aluminum ballhead - giving
you the flexibility to 360 degree panning and 90 degree tilting. The rubberized tightening
***, makes panning and tilting a breeze. A bubble level is provided to give you level
shots even without an LCD BacPac or the iPhone app for preview. Adjusting the ballhead truly
gives you complete control to frame the perfect shot - every time.
Included in the box is a quick-release clip with a standard 1/4"-20 tripod adapter, allowing
you to mount virtually any compact camera. You simply screw it into your camera, slide
it on to the GorillaPod's shoe and when you're done - press the release button and slide
it out. The GorillaPod Action Tripod also comes with a quick-release mount specifically
for the GoPro. Just connect your GoPro with a standard thumbscrew, slide it into the Action
Tripod and you're good to go. Disconnecting works exactly the same way - with the press
of the release button.
Now you may be asking yourself - "but GoPro already has a quick-release system, why would
GorillaPod create their own?" This is a good point, but GoPro's system is bulkier and a
lot of people have more cameras than just a GoPro. As an owner of several different
cameras myself, I see the versatility of GorillaPod's quick-release system as a plus. If you wan't
to use GoPro's quick-release system instead, don't worry - I have the perfect solution
for you. With GoPro's new tripod mount, you get a GoPro quick-release 1/4"-20 tripod mount
adapter. Screw this onto GorillaPods 1/4"-20 tripod mount, and now you can easily switch
from mount to mount.
GorillaPod's are meant to be mounted on any object that they can wrap their legs around,
and the Action Tripod is no exception! Due to it's versatility, the GorillaPod Action
Tripod gets my approval - and I believe it is an essential part of any amateur or professional
GoPro users kit.
