My presentation is about encouraging people to look at
a 3D printer as a tool that can be used for a wide variety of
methods and problems. We take the 3D printers that we've been using, they're actually
by students, and so that makes them a little bit different from the commercial kits that you might buy.
We're not just printing polymers, our printers are actually printing ceramic and glass
bearing pastes. We're printing magnetized rubbers and other kinds of
things. So one of the benefits of this is that the students actually are
participating in a dynamic lab experience where they're building a printer
that's never been assemble before or modifying that printer in a way that no one has ever done before.
The audience for this would be anyone interested who
want to assemble their own 3D printers or gain an understanding of
what kinds of 3D printers are actually affordable these days. Part of why
3D printing is a really hot topic now is because of the democratization of the technology.
So while it used to be very, very prohibitively expensive for anyone to get one of these
systems, now, we can build one for a little under a thousand dollars.
