If you're a teen
17 and a half to nineteen with an intellectual developmental disorder
you can apply for financial and health supports from the BC government
First, it's good to start early ideally six months before your 18th birthday
when you apply instead of filling out the Persons with Disabilities Form
BC youth with developmental disabilities will be able to use an
existing
assessment by a psychologist and most of the application
can now be completed online. To apply for disability assistance
you must first fill out the online assessment and application
once you've submited that, someone from our ministry will call you
the Ministry worker will let you know what other information we might need
and you'll have a chance to ask any questions about the application process
To assess your eligibility
we will require some documents such as your ID and bank statements
we also require a copy of an assessment by Registered Psychologist
or certified school psychologist. you might already have this assessment in
your files: or you can get a copy from school district in which your
latest assessment was done
once we have this information our ministry will determine what supports
you're eligible for
and then we'll mail you a letter to confirm the decision. We hope you'll find
a simplified process
easy and convenient. Here are some tips start the process early
and don't forget to send all the supporting documents. If we receive a
complete application and you were found eligible
your first cheque will be mailed to you as early as your 18th birthday.
