Welcome to Detcon1
My name is Maggi Idzikowski and I'm with the concom for Detcon1,
and we are giving an award for young adult and middle grade speculative fiction.
And I'm here with Sarah Zettel, who is going to be our master of ceremony,
to talk about the award.
I am so excited to be part of this, Maggi, we are in an absolute
Golden age of young adult and middle grade speculative fiction.
The authors that we see now are going so many new places
and have so many exciting characters and ideas. I would have murdered to have
the range of choices, the level of writing,
the humor, the suspense,
the drama that is out there now.
Maggi, what I'm particularly interested in is how are you going to nominate
the works for the award.
Nominations are open to anyone,
so people from all over the world can contribute to that.
This will bring in some new energy to the community of Detcon1.
The people who are participating in the convention, either as an active membership
or a supporting membership, can vote on the final award.
That's fantastic! Is there going to be a website?
Yes, you can nominate things on a paper ballot, or on the website there is a form you can fill out.
And what's the website?
You can find it at the Detcon1 website. http://www.detcon1.org/award/
Excellent, and are the nominations open yet?
The nominations are open now. They will be closing at the end of February.
What works are eligible?
Any works that were published in the past year, in English,
novel length rather than shorter stories,
but people don't have to worry about if they are for younger readers or older readers
as we will figure all that out at the end.
So, novel length works, written for under 18, published in 2013, in English.
Perfect.
This is going to be a wide range of excellent possibilities.
Influences are being pulled in from all over, not just America, but around the world.
Not just science fiction itself, but from pop culture, from music,
graphic novels have really come into their own, Manga, Anime, all mixing together to
make this wonderful wide weirdness that is modern science fiction.
They definitely have that.
They have a finger on pop culture. They have a hand in the way that social media
is being used to shape the readership these days.
All of this is coming together to change the face of fandom.
The boundaries are down, and that is so wonderful to see.
And the nominations close?
At the end of February.
The end of February. Well, we encourage everyone to get on the
website and nominate their favorite titles. Introduce us to your favorite works.
And we hope to see you at Detcon1.
See you there!
