It's the first time the NCAA has ever seen a
student-based group to help with this event.
Andy: I think it's the first one ever at least for field hockey
that is completely student run.
Lori: We are very unique in how we conceptualized our involvement
of our students from the very, very beginning.
Brian: I think it has taken it to a whole other level
for championships to come.
Lori: They were a part of the planning. They were a part of developing
the shared vision of what success would look like for this championship.
The field hockey organizing committee was a group of eighteen women.
Hi I'm Maddy Starbranch, I'm a sophmore at Mount Holyoke and I'm a FHOCer.
We essentially planned the championship with administrative help.
Hi I'm Brian Williams, I'm the chair of the Division III Field Hockey Committee.
From the minute I stepped onto the campus they had the students here over the summer,
they were prepared, they knew what their roles were,
they had been working hard meeting twice a month all spring to get ready for it.
It was really consistent with what we do in athletics
here at Mount Holyoke College.
We engage our students in any way that we can
where we see there is a learning opportunity.
Brian: And it brings that student to student athletes
for student athletes.
Cause we know best what will make a good championship, I think.
And I think that is really taking it over the top and it has made
it extremely special for everybody involved.
Team Members: It's so exciting-- we're going to play
in the championship game tomorrow. --So, it's so exciting.
Videographer: How has Mount Holyoke been treating you?
-- Very well. -- Amazing.
Everything has been so great. Yeah, great hospitality.
Brian: And I think the teams that have come in have really appreciated it.
The hospitality areas have been a huge hit.
Andy: I think a lot of people think you name it, they show up,
and you play and this has been a year in the making.
Brian: It's been a whole long year of work a lot of hard work on everyone's part.
Rachel: Well we started planning last spring brainstorming.
We started off with huge plans, big plans, you know--
going from big dreams to practical dreams.
JJ: We realized that we needed to plan every single little detail.
Relebohile: Recruiting the volunteers.
Taylor: Putting together the right program or making little key cards
for the hotels that say the championship.
JJ: The music that you can hear in the background
to the people who get the passes.
Taylor: Like making signs and posters.
The little things make it good.
Rachel: And we also communicate a lot with the NCAA officials
to figure out what they need to do.
Brian: From minute one with Mount Holyoke I've had the best time.
Looking forward to the conference calls, looking forward to my visits,
everyone is so friendly, they just get you excited to do
a better job than you are already trying to do.
I mean it's fantastic. It's been an amazing experience.
Lori: The games were extraordinary.
Rachel: I was so pleased, I could not have been more happier
with the way the banquet turned out.
Taylor: Yes, it's great weather, everything is just flowing
and I'm actually really jealous of the players right now.
I'll be honest.
Lori: If anybody looks at this championship you could say
it was a flawless championship.
Relebohile: The weeks leading up to it there's been a lot of sleepless nights
making sure that we have people covering all of the shifts,
but I think overall it's been a great experience and I really enjoyed it.
Kristen: It's really been a tremendous opportunity for some of us who are
interested in sports management, sports marketing,
and athletics administration.
Lori: I don't know when any of us learn how to create budgets,
but they learned how to create budgets in this process.
Relebohile: Event management is the biggest skill
that I have learned thus far.
Rachel: I'm going to take away that I got to plan an entire
banquet for the Field Hockey Championships.
JJ: The skills I've learned are irreplaceable for both on the field and off.
Rachel: I had a great time doing it.
I worked with great people and I learned a lot that I'm going to
take with me hopefully in the future when I'm looking for jobs next year.
We did the College proud and I think everybody involved
with the championship is going to walk away from this having a sense of what excellence
means and what excellence looks like and you'll take that with you to
to every project that you're ever a part of.
