In addition to the tropical fruits of the citruses like a lemon, orange
lime,
things like kiwi and mango that you can take the seeds out of and
actually get a plant to grow from, you might also consider these tropical fruit which,
again, are interesting for their color. And also they're very tasty.
Things like papaya. Papaya is loaded with just hundreds of tiny black seeds on the
inside. The tiny black seeds are covered with kind of a jelly-like coating. All you
have to do is basically wash off that coating and what you have left is something
that almost looks like a pepper corn.
And if you just sow these,
they germinate extremely easy
and they produce a plant that
I kind of like to think of as almost like maple tree. The leaf is kind of a
three part leaf
almost looks like maple tree.
And they grow extremely fast and you can always get these to go to a four, five,
six-foot tree easily over the course of a growing season. So consider growing
papayas. In the center here we something that is very attractive called a pomegranate.
And pomegranate is one of those fruits were basically you are eating these seeds
that are covered with a very thick, jelly-like coating. All you have to do is take
and wash off that jelly-like coating,
and inside is a tiny white seed.
Sow that and you get basically a tree with extremely narrow, thin leaves.
Again, you may or may not
be able to get this thing to have
fruit on it, but
if it does, they will bloom with a white flower and form these tiny little fruit that
has almost like a trumpet formed on the very end of it. And finally is everybody's
favorite for growing tropical fruit, and thats avocado. I think everyone here
understands that
the center of this avocado is this large chestnut-colored pit.
And there are a variety of ways to start this thing. You can take the pit out,
some people know the classic method of sticking some toothpicks in the side and hanging
it over a glass of water allowing it to set out roots and then it will send out a
growing point.
Or if you don't want to do that you can very easily do the same thing by putting
this thing in a pot of soil,
burying about half the seed in the soil,
again, taking care of it naturally like you would for any kind of a
seed germination project, and you'll get a plant that has a the very long,
strap-like leaf,
similar to a mango, but the leaves little wider. So again, these are just some more
of the tropical fruits. So when you're in the store,
look at all of them; they're not only good to eat, but they're also fun to grow.
