David in Addison Illinois finally somebody wants to disagree with me
you think drug testing is a good thing armpit
absolutely I A actually kind of them shock that
no one wants to disagree with you on this a
a look at it from the employer's perspective like that the previous
caller who
tripped and fell if he was high then
the employer absolutely shouldn't have to pay because he was hiding it
threatened Felpro it was alright
why should that why should you limit on employers want to do that
its is especially for the private business and maybe you have an argument
for
government drug testing even know I don't think that that would apply either
but as a private employer to limit their ability to
to limit their own liability when someone else does something
wrong really don't right now you are making a true that make any sense to you
are making the true libertarian argument
and my response to that is that
if we were in a labor market where people
actually had the choice if employers
and they could be easily say you know I don't want to work for you because you
drug test people
I wanna go work for the sky over here and employers were competing based on
the fact that they did or didn't drug test
then yeah I would agree with you but that's not the world in which we live
the world in which we live right now is that coercion
is Association with employment employers
are in the catbird seat they do control their employees
employees are desperate for jobs there's been a for every
you know anybody everybody knows if they lose their job there's a long line of
people out there who are willing to take it
and and so they will put up with all sorts of indignities
and I would think if you're genuinely libertarian David
that you are opposed to coercion all
I absolutely opposed to coercion I don't identify strictly with libertarianism
but mild this is coercion this is an employer course in their employees
to surrender their privacy there's a lotta ways to tell a there's a lotta
ways to tell somebody is impaired be on a drug test
be a drug test is actually not even the best way to tell somebody is impaired it
only tells you whether or not they've used drugs
and see there's a lot of things that cause impairment beyond
drug use for example lack of sleep it be if if you're
if your logic is correct then the next step for employers
is to get those little drop cam things that the internet all they advertise all
over the internet and stick them in everybody's bedroom
so that employers can check up and make sure the people are actually asleep for
eight hours every night
now if let me let me respond to all that first of
it's not coercion West you're also willing to concede there
every single tracks a senate we've ever had is coercion
and every single government program is coercion this is absolutely behavior
modification
and I'd argue that it's beneficial behavior modification
your courage in employees not to be not to do drugs which is personal
illegal in almost every state arm and to not be impaired on the job
something that we should encourage especially in industries like trucking
and arm that one construction worker guy like you don't want those people to be
high or drunk
or lacking sleep and no you don't and that's why I departed the job a
supervisor is to measure impairment i mean a
have somebody walk a line right a year like the old
the older drug test the police issues before they got breathalyzers
can you walk a straight line that's gonna tell you whether that person has
some sort in neurological disorder that might be creeping up on them
whether they have their pre diabetic and creeping up on the Minister to lose
sensation their feet I mean these are all things you gotta
I you know a construction worker you know work in 20 starts stories up on
iron you wanna know these things
there's a or whether that person didn't have enough sleep last night these are
things that can cause serious impairment
but instead but for drug testing people and so super visors aren't even doing
those tests because they've got this false
sense I've security and safety thinking oh yeah everybody's drug tested
everything's fine
on out agree with you that it in cases were supervisors don't do their job
spending that's on the supervisors well they should be
absolutely measuring for impairment but the whole waterline argument you just
gave me his
proof positive why we actually need drug testing because
ok you know this but anecdotally I have a couple friends who can be
crashed out of their minds and walk a straight line and
absolutely fake it in an economy where
we do have artworks not you know free labor or you can
go work wherever you want arm people
have an absolute incentive to fake it so if you don't get enough sleep or if your
heart or even I I have never
I you know I I also know people who can drink a lot or who can use a lot of
drugs
and and hold it together for a while but not for eight hours a day five days a
week
in the company people who have come to know them well
