Part 2 Now I would like to play a few music selections
for you and you can think about what feeling the music is expressing. (Someone has a question)
I would like to answer the questions at the end. Questions from audience: I don't understand
the curves -- what they represent. The curves are the results from his measurements. He
did it this way -- every person has a specific body reaction to each emotion. It has to do
with breathing -- all the body reactions. For example: with reverence it is as if a
person is pausing, holding their breath (the author described it this way). How can you
measure something like this? It is very difficult to measure all these parameters. He invented
a machine for this. A person has to sit in a certain position and they then hear in the
background different impulses. When they hear an impulse they then had to press a button.
A person has to be feeling the emotion, for example anger, anger, anger. Then suddenly
an unexpected impulse is heard and the person has to then press the button. It was then
measured how hard the button was pressed and also how close they leaned towards it. But
the author also showed that it is similar with paintings. There are paintings that express
love and it is the same way in music. Naturally there was in the baroque music (I don't want
to talk about this too much), but in the baroque music there was a motif that was like a hug,
like being comforted. This is always a round motif. Or love. Naturally the jagged curves
are something completely different. This is not a complete description. If you read the
authors complete description you understand it much better. Good. I would like to show
a few examples. Please think about what feeling it is expressing. I don't want to have to
discuss it afterwards because the lecture would be too long then. But afterwards I will
confirm what feeling it was. Pay attention! (Music plays) I will play a video along with
this. (Music and video play) This was a commercial.
It has to do with heart-felt love and the desire for the other person. The slogan was
"L'amour est un tresor" -- love is a treasure. The product was named "Tresor" -- treasure.
With such a commercial they don't leave anything to chance. Such commercials cost millions
of Euros to produce. Especially when the main actress is an actress with an oscar, Kate
Winslet, along with the director, Peter Lindbergh. Everything was of the highest quality. And
the music that was composed for this commercial wasn't accidentally like this. They wanted
to get the attention of the audience as quickly as possible, even if they didn't watch every
second of the commercial. In this sequence there was a lot about love. The melody was
(hummed a little) very round. The gesture was also very round. If I were to conduct
this song I would do it like this: (motions with his hands). A conductor has to work with
things like this -- you have to express in your face what the music is expressing. And
this is a round gesture. And now our next selection. (music plays)
This selection has to do with combat and aggression, hate and anger. Now the video that goes along
with it. (music and video play) And now for another selection. Pay close attention.
This selection has to do with sex. It is from a film -- not a film -- it is at the top of
the music charts for the sexiest music. I don't really like to play this in the church,
but I have to show this too. It is interesting on the one hand how he uses his voice (gives
example of long-drawn slurs) with the trailing tones. And just like you see in the curve,
there is first a pause and then gets into it. The video with this song was only words,
so we can move along to the next feeling -- pay close attention.
This selection comes from the film "Diary of Anne Frank". The story is of a Jewish family
during the Second World War. The father, who has lost his whole family, returns from the
concentration camp and has just been given his daughter's diary. He thinks back on the
time while she was still alive -- he is remembering. He is experiencing great pain, sorrow and
emptiness together with happy memories. In this selection there is a violin melody (hums)
-- the melody pauses and then falls deeply. At the end chello with just one long tone
-- completely empty. (now the video plays with music)
