Cheri DiNovo: Yes, well I think the first time I was involved in a human rights struggle
was with We Demand, which was back in 1971. And that was a group of us who got together.
I was the only woman in Canada – apparently I didn’t know it at the time – that delivered
a slate of demands to the Parliament buildings in Ottawa around gay rights, what we called
gay rights back then.
So it was probably the first although I was also involved in trying to get sex itself
into the Ontario Human Rights Code.
I grew up in the era where there was help wanted male and help wanted female ads. And
I was very young at the time, as a teenager, and I was also involved in that. So I remember
that struggle, although I wasn’t at the forefront of that by any means.
