So basically this whole technique is called side drifting for steel head what we're doing
is is go a bout this speed right here which is slower then the speed of current when we
cast were using long leaders these are six foot leaders OK! What you don't want is swinging
your rods side to side when we cast these long leaders you have to be real careful because
what happens is some one could end up getting a hook in the eye ok. So when we cast we just
want to flip them straight over like this ok. We don't want to swing side to side some
one could get a hook in the eye. We don't want that obviously! So when we cast what
were going to do is when everybody is ready were going to stand up I always cast first.
Ok! Flip you bail straight up, hold you line up flip the bail over flip t straight behind
you were going to be fishing both side of the river. Not at the same time but we will
switch back and forth each side of the river. When we cast we want to cast at a forty five
degree angle, up river. Ok. As soon as your bait hits the water you want to flip your
bail over. So when we cast up river like this the bait hits the water flip your bail over
and then just let it ride ok. When you feel your lead ticking bottom, your going to feel
you lead tic tic tic tic tic because your leading is going to be dragging bottom. The
worst thing you can do is be jerking on everything you feel. That you don't want to do ok. So.
when were a floating down river your going to feel your line ticking bottom ticking bottom.
When a steal head grabs it it gonna almost feel like a rubber band at the end of your
rod. Their will be no mistake. he going to grab it and pull and pull be almost like someone
yanking on a rubber band at the end of your rod. It will be that stretchy, give feeling
so. When you set the hook on a steal head you want to set it hard. You don't want to
be just lifting up you want to swoosh. You should hear your rod ' Swoosh' wisp sound. The
are long limber nine and a half foot rods. That's what they are deigned for. If you just
lift up a little bit your not going to get that hook in the fish. They call they steal
head for a reason. They have a really hard head and hard face and hard mouth, When you
set hook you want to set the hook hard. When you have a fish on another really importation
thing and it goes back to fighting fish. The worst thing you can do when you have a steal
head on and hes pealing line. The worst thing you can do is reel and reel and real. What
that does is, is that twists your line up. So when a steal head is running you let him
run and when he stops running you real down and real down and you lift that how you fight
is you list up and real down and when he take off running you let him go and when he stops
running lift up and real down. It's called pumping a fish to a bow. the next most important
thing is when your fighting a fish is always remember your boat is your worst enemy on
the water and what I mean by that is the line touching the boat. When your fighting a fish
all guarantee he going to go under the boat. You have a nine and a half foot rod you want
to use it. Put the rod down in the water if he goes under neath the boat the steal head
is blowing up over here but your over here fighting the fish put your rod down in the
water ill spin the boat around to prevent that but I can move this boat as fast as a
fish. So when he goes under neath the boat. The worst thing you can do is have you rod
up right?, If he goes under neath the boat drop your rod. So if you hear me "put your
rod in the water, put your rod in the water' i'm not yelling at you. Im trying to keep
you from losing your fish. So if he goes under neath the boat you want to put your rod in
the water. If this line touched the boat its just like taking a knife to it. Ain't no different.
That line touches the boat with that much weight on their it will pop it every time.
So keeping a tight line on a fish, don't let the line touch the boat and a when hes taking
off making a hard run you don't want to be reeling and reeling reeling it will twist
up all the line on the reel. So and when we cast what we want to do is when we cat is
soon as my bait hits the water the next guy is going to cast above me, the nest guy will
cast above him and so forth. Ok so when we are going through here my bait is going to
hit the water and we want the next bait to hit the water, the next bait, next bait and
next bait and we will come right on down the drift as were floating down the river right
through the hole. When we get it all down and when you guys get it all figured out and
see how its all going. We all stand up in the center of the boat. That's another thing
is we don't all want to be sitting on one side of the boat because then the boat is
sitting like this down the river and we wont float right. So keeping the boat flat floating
down the river and all the bait is hitting the water accordingly it will make way less
tangle ups and a lot better successful day. Now we are going to run up river were going
to run quite a ways up river all the way to Merwin dam. And see what to day brings. Every
