DEVORAH: Welcome to the Smithsonian National
Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy
Center. I'm Devorah Jackson, Aerospace Educator
in Residence.
***: And I'm *** Unser, the other Aerospace
Educator in Residence and a former Air Force
Pilot.
DEVORAH: We're from the Museum's Education
Department and although we spend most of our
time teaching students, we'd like to spend
a little time helping you plan a successful visit.
***: The Museum has much to offer.
You will find our website contains up-to-date
information about the Center and all our activities.
You will also find many interactive elements
for your students there, including 3-D images
and live web cams.
DEVORAH: When booking your visit you
have a variety of Learning Labs and docent-led
tours to choose from. Classroom-based Learning
Labs can be chosen from among twelve grade
appropriate lessons based on the standards
of learning and our collections.
***: Pre and post-visit learning
lab activities are available on our website.
DEVORAH: Our carefully crafted school
tours are based around four themes to augment
the Learning Lab experience.
***: We encourage you to book online
and please remember to make your reservations
at least three weeks before you come. Bear
in mind that labs and tours have time restrictions,
so be sure to allow enough time for your visit
and activities. You will receive an e-mail
confirmation of the details of your visit
within three business days.
DEVORAH: When organizing your trip,
keep in mind that you'll need to arrange for
one adult chaperone for every 15 students.
Please make sure these adults know that they
must accompany their charges at all times
both in the Center's hangars and in all of
the education programs.
***: By the way, someone with a baby
or small child is not a suitable chaperone!
DEVORAH: When your buses arrive they
should enter through Gate 5 and use the bus
drop-off and pick-up areas near the visitor's
entrance to the museum. Before students get
off the bus, please remind them that there
are no coat check facilities and only a few
lockers available inside the Museum. We recommend
that they leave backpacks on the bus, along
with anything else they don't want to take
through security or carry with them during
their visit.
***: After your students have passed
through the security station please check-in
at the Welcome Center located inside the entrance
hall. You and your group will then be directed
to the Claude Moore Education Center on the
lower level of the museum.

DEVORAH: We encourage time to be built
into your schedule for students to explore
the museum on their own or in small groups.
Museum self-guides are available from the
Welcome Center upon request.
DOCENT: This airplane right here flew from
Los Angeles to Washington in an hour and four
minutes.
>> STUDENTS: Wow!
DEVORAH: Throughout the Udvar-Hazy
Center your students will find highly knowledgeable
docents and volunteers who can answer most
of the questions they might have.
***: Discovery Stations are sometimes
available to provide additional hands-on learning
experiences.
DEVORAH: Our Learning Labs take place
in our three multi-media classrooms. During
these standards-based lessons, students might
plan a mission to Mars, investigate the forces
of flight, or learn how aircraft and spacecraft
heat up when traveling at high speeds.
DOCENT 2: What's that look like?
***: Although, your visit to the
museum, classroom activities and docent-led
tours, are provided at no cost, further experiences
are available for purchase.
DEVORAH: A variety of ride simulators
allow your students to experience the thrill
of flying.
***: Viewing an IMAX film takes your
students to new heights while offering an
unforgettable educational experience. Specific
IMAX ON-DEMAND movies can be requested for
early morning groups of 50 or more. Teacher
Guides for IMAX films can be obtained from
the theater Box Office.
DEVORAH: Tickets for these additional
experiences can be bought before you arrive,
through Group Sales, or at the Box Office
on the day of your visit. Purchasing in advance
through our group sales department will not
only save you time but also money.
***: When it's time for a meal or
snack, the McDonald's restaurant or McCafe
offer a variety of fast food options.
DEVORAH: Groups of 20 or more may
contact Smithsonian Group Sales to make special
arrangements for ordering lunches and IMAX
tickets at discounted prices. A menu is available
on our website.
***: Food & drink, other than bottled
water, are not permitted inside the museum.
School groups are welcome to use the restaurant
with the purchase of food items. Those not
using the food court should plan to eat on
their buses or, when weather permits, to use
the picnic tables provided outside.
DEVORAH: Your students are sure to
be attracted to the museum's store, but they
do tend to get lost in there just before it's
time to leave! Even at lunch, or in the Museum
Store, chaperones are responsible for their
students.
***: Our museum welcomes everyone,
including those with disabilities. The building
is wheelchair accessible and sign language
interpreters can be arranged if requested
at least three weeks in advance. Please note
any special requirements on the on-line request
form.
DEVORAH: We hope that you and your
group enjoy your visit.
DEVORAH: If you have any questions please
contact the National Air and Space Museum's
Tours and Reservations office.
***: Before your visit you can check for
the latest, most detailed information on our
website. We want to ensure that your visit
to the Museum is a DAY OUT
DEVORAH: NOT A DAY OFF.
