The final beam was signed and ceremonially put into place Aug. 24 (2009) at the construction site
of the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, which is scheduled to stand up October 2010.
Former Apollo 13 astronaut and retired Navy officer Captain James A. Lovell was on hand to sign the
beam, along with key leaders from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Navy and Walsh Construction.
The traditional ceremony, called "Topping Out," hoists the final steel piece into place.
It has a thousand-year history among ironworkers, and is said to bring "good luck" to a completed facility.
The signed beam was lifted to the top, west-end of the building's atrium.
And although visible from its location, it will eventually be coated in fire-resistant paint.
