Dennis: The best to understand how these new fuels and
technologies work and the kinds of savings and
benefits they offer is to actually hear from people in
fleets that are already using them so lets take a look
at some clean cities real world exmaples of how
biodiesel is making a difference in towns and
communities across the country. Dave: Hi I'm Dave
Gardy for Clean Cities TV, the educational internet TV
channel of the U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities
Program. CCTV features videos about projects of clean
cities coalitions around the country.
New Leaf Biofuel is a San Diego based biodiesel
company focused on preserving the environment through
production and supply of emission reducing biodiesel
to conventional diesel vehicle fleets. 6 years after
their founding in 2006, New Leaf Biofuel now produces
up to 100,000 gallons of fuel a month with plans to
continue growing. Jennifer Case, CEO of New Leaf
Biodiesel, in San Diego, CA, talks about how New Leaf
supports sustainability in San Diego, and who their
primary customers are. Jennifer: My name is Jennifer
Case I am the Chief Executive Officer of New Leaf
Biofuel we are a biodiesel manufacturer here in San
Diego, CA we produce approximately 140,000 gallons a
year a little over 1.4 million gallons per year we are
hoping over the next or so we can double that to 3
million gallons a year. New Leaf utilizes waste
vegetable oil as its only feed stock its a really
important part of sustainability for us because we are
taking a domestic local resource that was previously
used as a waste and converting it into a high quality
fuel our customers know that we are providing
something sustainable and domestic that was made right
here in San Diego that was made by San Diego locals
they feel good about the fact that biodiesel is much
better then petroleum for the environment and then
much better for economy because it is here supporting
a local business. Since 2006, New Leaf had produced 4
million gallons of biodiesel fuel that is the
equivalent of removing or avoiding 40,000 metric tons
of CO2 from the atmosphere by displacing petroleum and
that is approximately the same as taking 7000 cars off
the road for a year. Our primary customers are fleets
in and around the county of San Diego such as the city
of San Diego, as City of Chula Vista, City of
Oceanside, Allied Waste fleet, San Diego Charter and
dozens of other local fleets.
Dave: Biodiesel is a high quality, sustainable fuel,
that produces clean emissions and New Leaf
successfully continues to make it accessible to
companies and individuals of the San Diego Area. Their
environmental and economic impact will continue to
make positive changes for years to come. For Clean
Cities TV, I'm Dave Gardy.
