Many medical experts in the field of traditional cancer treatment as well as many alternative
practitioners believe that adhering to a certain diet and lifestyle will help in the battle
against cancer.
Since elevated insulin levels fuel tumor growth, it might be expected that low-carbohydrate
diets which reduce insulin would also reduce tumor growth. Also, tumor cells have a very
primitive metabolism, and can generate energy only by fermenting sugar. Normal cells can
switch to producing energy from ketones derived from fat, but tumor cells lack this ability.
If they have no sugar, they starve.
This cancer detoxification diet was created by German physician Max Gerson, who practiced
in Germany before emigrating to New York and starting a medical practice there in 1938.
The diet was part of what is called the Gerson Therapy, and it is an alternative choice for
treatment of chronic diseases as well as a possible cure for cancer.
Macrobiotic diets are vegetarian-based with the incorporation of whole grain ingredients
such as brown rice along with cooked vegetables. Early versions of the diet were strictly vegetarian
and quite limited in food selection.
