The long awaited Operation Puerto trial started in Madrid on Monday.
Five defendants, including the man at the centre of the doping scandal, Dr. Eufemiano
Fuentes, listened as the Judge reviewed legal details with lawyers before delaying testimony
until Tuesday.
Fuentes is accused of breaking public health laws.
Investigators uncovered the immense scale of doping in Spanish cycling back in 2006,
implicating the likes of Alberto Contador.
Former cyclist Jesus Manzano blew the whistle on Fuentes' doping ring and his lawyer is
seeking damages.
"In this trial, my client, Mr. Manzano, has claimed for moral damages that have been suffered
as a consequence of all of this. Also, the loss of his entire professional career and
for all of these practices. Mr. Manzano stopped being a professional cyclist and this is the
truth."
The case, in which 35 witnesses are expected to testify, is due to last until March 22.
