For the past 20 years, an unofficial "Gay Day" has been organized at Disney World. The
idea is quite simple: Tens of thousands of gay people put on red shirts and show up at
Disney World on the same day. It's a way for them to be visible and create a more comfortable
environment for themselves. That's really all there is to it. Apparently this is a problem
for some people. Prior to the event, the Florida Family Association hired an airplane to fly
around Disney World with a massive banner that said "Warning: Gay Day at Disney". (Why
is it that every organization with "family" in their name is always giving me something
to talk about?) Putting aside how utterly dystopic it feels to live in a country where
planes fly around to warn about gay people, the purpose behind this gesture is unclear
at best. What are they going to do, withdraw their idiot contingent from Disney World so
the rest of us can enjoy it in peace? What's there to warn about, anyway? According to
the Florida Family Association, children might be "exposed" to people wearing shirts, people
wearing hats, or people hugging. Yes, that would be the "same-sex revelry" that's allegedly
"offending tens of thousands of unsuspecting guests". Is that really the best they could
come up with? There's not exactly a pride parade going on here. So what's the problem?
It seems like their real objection is to the mere presence of gay people, as if any space
without an overwhelming majority of heterosexuals is no longer safe. It really just shows how
threatened they are by gay people simply going about their lives. How can they expect Disney
to go along with this? What are they supposed to do, maintain some minimum concentration
of straight people? Should they start asking people if they're gay before they're allowed
in? Even if that was legal, why would they? Gay people go to Disney World like anyone
else. They even bring their families. Are they not good enough for Disney? Maybe the
Florida Family Association thinks so. But if their idea of a "Magic Kingdom" is one
where everyone is straight, that's not going to fly in the real world. It's not like gay
people hide in their coffins every other day of the year. Sooner or later, you're going
to see some gay people, and it won't matter how offended you are. Disney might give you
your money back, but you won't be getting a refund from reality.
