Hi, I'm Mike Mugford. I Pastor Friendly Street Church here in Eugene, Oregon. Have pastored
this church for about twenty years, been in ministry for about thirty years. How did I
get my first job is what I've been asked to kind of tell you. The summer of my Sophomore
year I did a summer internship in a youth ministry in a church in California. The first
Sunday I got there, the Pastor informed me that he was resigning. Wow, what a summer.
I learned a lot that summer. As I graduated from college, I interviewed at a number of
churches including Friendly Street Church which is where I came to be a Youth Pastor
in 1977. I met with the Pastor and the staff and with the church at large, but I pretty
much had the connections through the Dean of Students at the college I graduated from.
There are a lot of different ways though I think to try to get your first job. Volunteering
somewhere first and making yourself indispensable. Today you could go on the internet, anywhere
from Craig's list to Monster.com. You've got to put out a lot of feelers. But if you're
good at what you're doing, the church will find you as well. People, word of mouth will
spread the news that you are somebody who might really fit into a church setting.
