June 2011 - Bolivia Sur Lipez and Altiplano
Sur Lipez Between 4000m and 5000m high
It's the end of the day and it starts to get cold, the wind blows and rain is coming. We must find a shelter and it will be fine.
Snow is coming with the big clouds up there. We have to go because the next shelter is 50km away.
- Finally snow is better than rain ! - At least it's not wet !
- Here we are in the tent, at 4600m high. It was a tough day ! - Yeah, really tough !
- We used a tarp, ou panniers and rocks to isolate the tent. We did our best to have a warm night.
Lately it was -15°C, -20°C at night, so with our -5°C sleeping bags it was borderline.
- It's going to be fine!
- Hmm, it seems yummy ! Is this my plate ? Yes, great !
- It's going to ease the dishes.
There's a sign right here, the path is there. Come on guys !
Today was not easy but, finally, the lagoon !
- How do you feel about cycling as high as the Mont Blanc ? - It's good that we became acclimatized first.
- It's not so much about the climbings in altitude, but more about cold and wind.
- It was cold but we cheated and had some coca leaves infused.
- These are your false teeth ? - No, it's my music to sleep well.
- Good night guys. - I turn off the light ?
- What is that ? - Aah, it's moving !
- At first it was -5°C so now we are happy because it's 2°C.
We are going down to 4000m high, meeting salt deserts and inhabitants again.
We are going to cross the largest salt desert in the world from South to North.
The Salar de Uyuni is partly flooded.
New challenge: the Salar de Uyuni. During this 80km stage we wanted to stop in the middle in the Isla Incahuasi
we had luck because the winter starts and the Bolivians offered us a roof and water.
After two days, we exit the salar and its difficulties. We leave whiteness, the sun and the salt.
