My name is Olivia and I am very proud to be a Media, Culture and Society student at the
University of Birmingham and I am Romanian.
The Vale Festival is the largest charitable music festival run entirely by students. It
happens every year at the University of Birmingham after the exam session. Every year we have
a new cause, we have new bands and, most importantly, every year we get between 2,000 and 5,000
students coming.
The best part about being involved in the Vale Festival is that it’s really made me
feel like I’m part of the University and, most importantly, part of Birmingham the city
itself. Everything we’ve done from trying to scout bands, to finding acts, liaising
with the university, with the sponsors, with the caterers, painting…everything’s really
made me feel like Birmingham’s my home.
The best thing about being an international student at Birmingham really coincides with
the best thing about being a student at Birmingham in general. That is, I think, the amazing
quality of the degree – I genuinely feel like I’ve found the intellectual mentorship
that I had been looking for. And apart from that there’s also a lot of fun. There are
so many students societies to choose from, so many things are represented, from political
interests, to music interests, to languages and cultures, and hobbies…there’s really
something to do all the time.
I would totally recommend the University of Birmingham to my friends and to all the international
students in general. First of all they have a beautiful degree that will make a difference
to them personally and to their CV, then they have access to such a diverse and vibrant
social life…so many student societies, so much to do…definitely do it! It was worth
it for me, it made me feel like home.
