The bridging or gathering stitch is a stitch that you can actually use to run a cord underneath
and gather it up. Now, I do prefer a ruffler or a gathering foot but in a pinch this is
a great technique and the stitch is perfect for it. Menu A stitch number 21. Now, I'm
going to actually use a foot letter C. It's your manual button hole foot because it's
got this little nub on the back and when you hook your cord at the half way point on the
back of it the thread is going to sit in the little grooves and kind of help guide itself
down underneath the presser foot. You can put this on before you put the foot on or
hook it around the back or you can do it while you put it on. So, we're just going to take
this stitch and what it's going to do is kind of drag the thread with it. It's stitching
down the middle and then bounces to the right, down the middle then bounces to the left and
then down the middle.
Let me show you how it's going to look, now this is great for gathering really home deck
fabrics. It's a very secure way to gather it up. It's kind of like putting it's own
little curtain rod through the stitching and because it's looped on the back part, it's
not going to pull out when we're all said and done. I really don't even have to hold
these but I just kind of hold them together and the two channels underneath this foot
is going to be what keeps them separated and guided perfectly. So, let's take a look. Here
the stitch which we're working with and when you pull along the ends here, it will easily
gather right on up because we're hooked at the beginning of the stitching so we can pull
that right on through. Here we go. And, you can gather lots or a little and just finesse
it and then go ahead and pin it in place where you project needs to be.
