Hello CWI business students. My name is Kim Leeder, I’m coming to you direct from CWI
Library and I wanted to give you an overview today of some great resources that we have
available to you for your business research. We’re going to go over first our library
catalogue where you can find books and other physical materials. Second, our database called
Business Source Premier where you can search for articles on business topics and third
our video database, Films on Demand, which has academic video on business topics. So
let’s get started! 1. Those paper things: Books!
The library website is located on the CWI site under current students. To run a quick
book search to see what books we might have on your business topic use our search box,
enter some basic key words for your topic, such as Facebook marketing, and hit go. Our
catalogue lists not only the books that we own, but books that other libraries own that
we could get for you within a couple days. But you’ll see that the results indicate
what items we already own. So Friends with Benefits: a Social Media Marketing Handbook
is an e-book that CWI library owns already. You can view it immediately but clicking the
view now button. Social Media Playbook is a printed book that we own and you can see
our availability by clicking that link. If you’d like us to hold this book, or mail
it to you, just click on the title and you’ll see that we have a hold button on the right
hand side. Another great time saver on this page is the cite/export button. Where you
can get a full citation in whatever style format you’re using. Pretty easy, huh? If
there is ever a book that you need that we don’t have, just let us know and we’ll
get if for you as soon as possible! 1. Short and sweet: Articles!
Now we’re on to searching for articles. So, you’ll want to go back to the library
website and look under our quick links box on the right hand side for the link to Business
Source Premier. Business Source Premier is a database of articles from business focused
publications, so it’s going to be very relevant to any business topic you might be searching.
If we try our search for Facebook Marketing again, you’ll see that we get a whole different
set of results from the catalogue search. Articles tend to be much shorter and more
focused than books so you’ll see topics that are also going to be more specific. Each
of the articles listed shows the title, the citation information and a full text link
so that you can view the full article. On the left hand side you’ll see options to
narrow down your search. You can filter by date, type of publication, and other options.
When you open up the full text of the article, you’ll be able to read the entire thing.
You can also use the tools on the right hand side to print, email, and also (every one’s
favorite) which is to get the full citation. Like you saw in our catalogue, these citations
are really great and can save you a lot of time. If you find that you’re not getting
the sort of results you were hoping for, you might need to tweak your search terms a little
bit. Unlike Google, it’s really important to pick out your key terms and not to type
just a whole sentence into the box. As always, if you get stuck or have trouble finding what
you need, please get in touch with the Library and we’d love to help you figure it out!
Need Visuals? Try a video! Last but not least, I just wanted to mention
our video database, Films on Demand, which is kind of like our academic YouTube. In this
database, you can search or browse by subject to watch videos related to your research topic.
If you find one that looks useful, you can click on the title, view the video and then
grab the citation to cite it in your work. Pretty cool!
Well, that’s all I’ve got, I hope you found this useful! If you have any questions,
please be sure to get in touch, we’d love to help you!
