Anger grows among Tauranga locals
as Rena bosses discuss the possibility
of leaving the wreckage of their ship on the Astrolabe Reef.
The company is looking to put the case
to the Environmental Court next month,
but local iwi are adamant not to let it happen.
More than two years on,
Tauranga iwi are still sticking to their guns
to get the Rena off their rock.
We're still holding on
to the country's promise
and the Government's promise.
It's the local iwi response
to a growing determinations of Daina Shipping Company bosses
to leave the wreckage behind.
If we allow this wreck to be left behind
it'll set a precedence.
Companies, in the future, will have this to look back on
and use as an example.
Rena bosses are expected to make their application
for resource consent
to the Environment Court next month.
Some iwi are concerned the application is a move
to get out of paying more than $300 million to remove the wreck.
The question is,
have they looked into other avenues besides leaving the wreck?
Despite their challenges,
Daina Shipping Company's application is expected to be granted
in the coming months.
The court ruling may go their way,
but it won't end there.
Daina Shipping Company will have to wait
until a room on the ship is removed
before putting their case forward,
a job made virtually impossible by rough winds and seas.
