Hello, I am Georgina Torriente, and I live and work here, in Havana, Cuba.
I studied journalism for five years in the former Soviet Union, where I was able
to learn several languages, among them Russian,
English and French.
I am familiar with almost my entire country
and I am among the few privileged Cubans who have visited some cities in Europe and America.
I love my blue sky, the MalecÛn --
the centennial levee that borders the north coast of the Cuban capital --
and the Morro lighthouse at the entrance of the Havana Bay,
which has existed for more than three centuries.
I began working as a journalist and also as a presenter at a local radio station in Cuba.
After this, I wrote international news stories for the state television newscast for several years.
I had the opportunity to write news for a website
and to do news stories for the CubavisiÛn Internacional channel,
which transmits to the world news stories on Cuba done by people who live here and are linked to the government.
That work allowed me to place the image of CubavisiÛn in television channels in Spain, Japan and the United States.
For me, the work was very attractive because, through the CNN World Report program,
I was able to spread ideas about what those of us who live in Cuba think about our lives here
and how we see ourselves from within.
Now I am an independent producer and try to make those who don't know us better understand
how we see ourselves, what we feel, and a little bit about why we are this way.
I work with two colleagues who are in charge of realizing the ideas that we share.
My friend Arnaldo, who is a journalist and cameraman, and Raul, who is the video editor.
We Cubans are a mixture of Spaniards and Africans,
from whom we take physical and cultural elements.
For five decades, we have lived under a socialist social system that has eliminated illiteracy
and which provides access to free health care to its entire population. But we're not perfect.
I prefer issues related to economics, society, culture, sports and science.
Did you know that Cuba has given music, sport and science to the world?
I hope that my stories from Habana, Cuba, will enable you to learn a bit more about my country.
