AARON: Just a peaceful night playing music. SARAH: Yeah, we're just hanging out.
AARON: Yeah. SARAH: You and me bu--buddy. B-buddy. My little bro.
AARON: Totally natural.
SARAH: Yeah, we're just -- hey, you wanna play a song?
AARON: Oh yeah, that sounds really great, what song did you have in mind?
SARAH: Uh, I was thinking of that hobo song that I wrote.
AARON: Oh yeah, I love that old hobo song. SARAH: Do you conveniently know how to play it?
AARON: I think I do conveniently know how to play that song.
SARAH: Good good.
AARON: Why don't - why don't you start us off?
SARAH: You want me to start? AARON: Yeah!
SARAH: Oh, I gotta do a thing first. AARON: Oh!
AARON: Well that'll sync it up now.
SARAH: Yeah, now it'll be all sunk.
I love the girl called Cabbage Rose I'll never let her cry
And if I lose my Cabbage Rose I think that I will die
Yes I think that I will die.
I've traveled all the land and sea I've rambled here and there
I've climbed the mountain tops And I have roamed without a care
But now I've found my hobo queen And never will I stray
I will belong to Cabbage Rose until my dying day
I love the girl called Cabbage Rose I'll never let her cry
And if I lose my Cabbage Rose I think that I will die
Yes I think that I will die
I'll shine the shoes upon your feet I'll fix your leakin' sole
I'll sing a song or play a tune To keep stew inside my bowl
Give me work and do be kind, or I'll have to move along
And I will lose the Cabbage Rose for whom I wrote this song
I love the girl called Cabbage Rose I'll never let her cry
And if I lose my Cabbage Rose I think that I will die
Yes I think that I will die.
Cabbage Rose is tall and fair Her hair is black as night
Her cheeks are sweet and pink Her eyes are like two pennies bright
Her voice is like a turtledove a-callin' out my name
Now I have met my Cabbage Rose I'll never be the same
I love the girl called Cabbage Rose I'll never let her cry
And if I lose my Cabbage Rose I think that I will die
Yes I think that I will die
I think that I will die, yes I know that I will die.
SARAH: That's a nice hobo song. AARON: That's nice and sweet.
You wrote a good song there, Sarah. SARAH: Did I write that?
AARON: I think you wrote that song. SARAH: Does that make me a hobo?
AARON: Well...maybe in spirit. SARAH: Oh.
Heh, I'm a spirit hobo. AARON: (laughs)
SARAH: (laughs) What a hearty laugh you have there, Aaron! Very natural!
AARON: (laughs even more heartily) SARAH: This guy.
So some of you might be a little confused about the whole "cabbage rose" thing.
There are two things in the world called cabbage roses.
There are these, which are roses that look like cabbages,
And there are these, which are cabbages that look like roses.
I'm talking about the latter. In the winter when a lot of people don't have
access to flowers, they'll use ornamental cabbages, or cabbage roses, in floral arrangements.
One year I noticed a lot of these at the Pike Place Market, and thought,
I just really like cabbage roses, they're pretty, but they're sort of weird,
they're not quite what you're expecting. And then I realized that the words
"Cabbage Rose" would be a perfect name for like, a lady hobo.
Kinda pretty, but also not quite what you're expecting.
From there I developed this whole story in my head about this hobo and the lady he falls
in love with and he would write her a song, and I haven't finished writing the story yet,
but I did finish writing the song. This song will probably be on my next album,
but for now you can download the version from this video for free on my Bandcamp.
There's a link down there to my Bandcamp, my Patreon, which I'd really love you
to check out, and then all my other Internet stuff as well.
I hope someday that I'm able to share the story of Jacktown Zeke and Cabbage Rose
with you guys, but for now, I hope you liked the song.
