I'm going to show you how to make stockinette stitch.
This stitch has two different sides, a front and a back. When you're knitting flat, you're
going to be knitting across the front of your work, knitting the basic knit stitch, and
then when you get to the back, you'll be slipping the first stitch if you want a slip stitch
edge, keeping the yarn in front because on the back, you're going to be purling across.
On the front, you knit straight across, and on the back, you purl straight across. To
get stockinette in flat knitting, the beautiful thing about stockinette is that the front
gives you this lovely flat stitch which most people think of as being the basic knit stitch.
However, there's a down side. Stockinette tends to curl. Here's an example of a really
curled edge at the bottom of the stockinette swatch.
There's also ways to get stockinette when you knit in the round, which means you don't
have to purl. So, if you are knitting in the round, all you have to do is the knit stitch
around and around and around without having to purl. This hat is an example of stockinette
in the round, and there you can see all the little Vs.
That's an example of how to do stockinette.
