>> Hi my name is Soumia.
I'm majoring in business.
I'm from Morocco.
This is my first semester here at Cerritos College.
>> Hi my name is Ruby Castillo.
I'm an English major here at Cerritos College.
This is my second year and I'm planning to transfer to UC Santa Barbara.

>> It was scary on the first day of school.
I mean the first week I wasn't really scared.
I was afraid.
Am I gonna get what the teachers are talking about?
I didn't know that syllabus means the thing that we have we're gonna need the whole semester.
That was the funniest thing, cause that word was new for me.
I felt bad because I didn't know that word, then I was like, oh that's fine.
I'm learning, it's nothing wrong with that.
>> Actually when I went to go see a counselor I was so excited because I was
like yeah I have this many classes.
I didn't know it was 60 transferrable units, not just 60 units.
So it was like I didn't know that anything less than 100 wasn't transferrable.
So she told me that and she also told me about assist.org.
So that's where I kind of figured out what are my major prep classes that I should take
for the school that I want to transfer to.
Without going to see a counselor I would have never known of that website.
It was really helpful that I went because I had even taken accounting.
My major's English.
I don't need that, I was just taking classes because I just thought I needed 60 units.

>> Every time I get up like 5:30 I thinking about what I'm gonna learn that day,
how many people I'm gonna meet, how many new people,
how many new students I'm gonna meet and I'm gonna talk to.
Because I was kind of shy but now I'm not anymore.
Yeah this what pushed me to wake up early and come here early
and be here before the teachers even come to the class.
And I always am the first one who is in the class, always, like every single day.
>> I was just persistent.
I had to set the goal.
I had quit my job because I wanted to be a full time student
and when I did it I ended up dropping classes.
There's no point in me quitting my job if I'm gonna drop my classes,
so it was like I have to finish it.
>> I have to work hard, more than students here do because first of all I don't speak English.
I have to do double the work they do.
Also I have goals.
I want to transfer too and I want to finish this I want to finish my 60 units and get it done.
>> I think the first time that I really felt like good
about my whole semester was the first time that I actually competed the 12 units because before
that I was a part time student and the first semester that I said, oh I'm gonna be full time,
I ended up dropping like 2 classes.
I couldn't take it I was just used to having 2 classes and that's it
and when I finished the full semester and then I got this letter, oh you're on the Dean's List!
I was so happy.
