Here in Tunbridge Wells Borough it's very easy for residents to recycle and compost their waste. We have two systems for household collection.
This is the brown bin which is collected every fortnight from residents.
It can be used for food waste, that's cooked and uncooked kitchen waste, and things like tea bags.
You can also use it for your garden clippings.
You can line the base of the bin with cardboard, and you can even use it to dispose of pizza boxes that have got food on them, this waste is then taken away to be composted.
Please only use paper to wrap the food waste, do not use plastic bags or the “biodegradable” type of bag sold in supermarkets.
This is the first of two green boxes.
This is collected fortnightly at the same time as the brown bin.
It can be used for cardboard, glossy magazines, newspaper, junk mail, envelopes, catalogues and telephone directories.
If you stack the newspapers up this way you get more newspapers in the box and it also stops them from blowing away.
On a windy day you can use a piece of wood with a stone or brick on top to prevent “escape”.
The other green box provided is also collected fortnightly along with the paper and cardboard.
This box is for plastic bottles and cans; please ensure that only plastic bottles are put into this box, and no other types of plastic waste.
Please wash and squash bottles and cans where possible before putting them into the box.
This will help prevent smells and increase the amount that will fit in the box.
Aerosol cans such as hairspray and deodorant can also go into the box but please don’t attempt to squash these.
Most type of cans can be recycled in the box but don’t include foil containers.
If it is windy it is preferable to stack the boxes with the plastic and cans at the bottom and the paper and card box on top.
This will help prevent the lighter items blowing around.
Residents are asked to recycle a number of other items at the recycling banks located throughout the borough.
The items accepted include glass bottles and jars, split by the various colours, tin cans; that's food and drink cans, and also textiles and shoes.
The Kent County Council Household Waste and Recycling Centre at North Farm, Tunbridge Wells, also provides facilities for recycling a variety of materials,
including electrical appliances, low energy light bulbs and batteries.
The remaining non recyclable rubbish goes in the green bin.
This material ends up at the nearby Energy from Waste plant where it is burnt, producing electricity for the plant and local supply network.
For further information about recycling and for a full list of the sites please visit the Tunbridge Wells Borough Council website.
Thank you for recycling and reducing the amount of rubbish that is thrown away.
