Hi, I'm Miriam, one of the Aquarist/Divers here at the National Aquarium of New Zealand,
and I'm here with these beautiful corals. Corals possess some of the most beautiful
and striking colours of any creature in the ocean.
Our Corals here at the National Aquarium were kindly donated to us from Invercargill, and
this tank was set up in 2009. The Corals we have here are a mixture of hard
and soft corals. If conditions are suitable, Corals reproduce by splitting, or spawning,
and spreading across a patch of ocean. As you can see, Corals provide a vivid spectrum
of colours in their habitat, making them a favourite with many of our visitors.
Some visitors to the National Aquarium will sit in front of the Coral tank and just watch
it for hours. It's like watching a little village go about its daily business.
Some of the species of fish that live amongst the Corals are your Clownfish, Surgeon Fish,
and Bangaii Cardinals. Corals are a very delicate eco-system, and pollution discarded in the
ocean waters by humans can destruct the conditions, often causing degradation or death of the
living Coral reefs.
