This video gives an overview of the enhancements in BMC Remedy Action Request System version
8.1. Hello, I’m Lisa Greene from the BMC Remedy
AR System documentation team.
We’re so glad you are looking to install or upgrade to AR System 8.1. You’ll find
some exciting, new enhancements, including these for developers and administrators:
A simplified installer Granular overlays
A new utility to simplify the integration between BMC Atrium Single Sign-On and AR System
Improvements to the Db-Case-Insensitive option in the ar configuration file
Enhanced workflow logging Support for IPv6
And, support of BusinessObjects Enterprise Eleven, version 4.0
And these enhancements for users Improved reporting
And rich-text-formatting field improvements
Let’s take a look at some of these new features a little more closely.
The installer has been simplified. The number of screens was reduced, and now you configure
Email Engine, full-text search, and the SNMP Agent after you install AR System instead
of during the installation. When you run the suite installation program,
you will select the type of installation that you want to perform. You have these options:
AR System Server, which installs the AR System server, Approval Server, Assignment Engine,
Email Engine, and Flashboards. It also installs the various plug-ins such as AREA LDAP and
web services.
Another option is AR System Mid-Tier, which installs the BMC Remedy Mid Tier (and Crystal
Web Application if a BusinessObject Eleven installation is available).
And, finally (on Microsoft Windows environments) AR System Clients, which installs BMC Remedy
Developer Studio (and the Localization Toolkit), BMC Remedy Data Import, and BMC Atrium Integrator
Spoon. To configure Email Engine, FTS, and the SNMP
Agent after you install, open the appropriate configuration form from the BMC Remedy AR
System Administration console.
Under the System category, click Email for Email Engine configuration forms. Under the
General category, you can click FTS Configuration or SNMP Configuration.
AR System objects now use granular overlays.
With granular overlays, you can:
Add to, overwrite, or inherit different parts of an object in an overlay
You can modify some characteristics of an object while inheriting other parts.
Or, you can add to aspects of an object while inheriting properties from the origin object.
If parts of an object are inherited or added to, those updates to the origin object are
made to the overlay.
Using granular overlays minimizes the need to reconcile overlays after applying upgrades
or patches.
For more complete information about granular overlays, see our other videos on overlays
or see the BMC Remedy AR System documentation. A new utility simplifies the integration between
BMC Atrium Single Sign-On and the AR System server and mid tier.
The Single Sign-On integration was removed from the AR System installer, and you can
run the new utility after you install the AR System server and mid tier.
You will run this utility twice . . . once to integrate the AR System server and again
to integrate the mid tier. You will enter slightly different inputs for each.
Workflow logging was enhanced to display easy-to-understand and user-friendly log statements in the log
window. Log information now includes:
Start and end statements for active links and events
Indentation of log statements And meaningful descriptions for all active
link functions
The log window also contains a Clear button to clear the logs.
When you schedule a report, you can now modify the embedded report qualification by setting
the Qualification to Use field in the AR System Report Schedule UI dialog box.
In this field, you can use the external qualification that you entered when searching the form data,
or you can modify that qualification.
If you modify it, the qualification from the initial qualified search is overridden.
If the Qualification to Use field is empty, the embedded report qualification is used.
The Qualification to Use field does not appear: When you publish or schedule a report from
the Report Console (instead of performing a form search)
After an unqualified form search Or after editing an existing schedule that
has an empty qualification And, lastly, enhancements to rich-text-formatting
fields include: Bookmark functionality that allows you to
create bookmarks to link specific text in an RTF field or link to a different RTF field
on the same form. You can also link to external websites or create workflow to generate a
dynamic URL that is then applied to an RTF field.)
Another enhancement is the RTF support in BMC Remedy Email Engine. (You can also see
attached images inline with the text.) We hope this video has helped you learn what
new features to expect in BMC Remedy AR System 8.1. Thank you for watching.
