Hello it's Diane. Here is page 2 of my Alice in Wonderland art journal.
In this scene, Alice discovers a golden key which opens a small door.
In this video I'm going to share a few secrets with you
including using watercolours and some drawing tips.
All the materials are listed on my website how-to-be-a-bad-artist.com
I've posted some links in the description area below.
For the background, I'm adding a watercolour wash graduating in colour from yellow to crimson.
As you can see, I've added too much water here and the paint has bled,
but you will see how I've rectified this later on in the video.
I'm also using a tissue to lift the paint and leave some white areas.
I'm trying to create a sense of depth to create
a tiled effect on the floor in the foreground.
Watercolours are great for building up layers
and I like to use a large brush for the background and
and add in detail with a fine brush later.
I'm painting the background
first then adding elements on top to create a collage.
I'm going to share a secret with you here,
you don't have to be able to draw. Here, I'm tracing the outline of Alice
with a pencil.
Then I'm turning over the tracing paper
and going over the same line again. Then
turn it over on top of your watercolour paper and trace over it again.
When you lift the tracing paper you'll see that there's a line that
you can follow.
And now I'm going over that line with a black pen.
As you can see I've slightly altered the original
illustration.
Next I'm adding in the watercolours with a fine paintbrush.
Here I'm drawing the cake that Alice finds.
I've decided to draw it as a cupcake. It's a really easy shape as its
basically just a spiral with a cherry on the top.
Once I've drawn it, I have go over the top
with a black pen and then fill in with watercolour.
I decided to create a box with a lid
that the cake fits in. So here, I'm drawing the lid,
the I'm going over with the black pen and then I'm painting it using watercolours.
Then I'm going to cut it out and assemble it all together.
I decided to add a
piece of clear acetate to the lid.
I stuck it on with double-sided sticky tape and then just trimmed the edges with a
pair of scissors.
Alice finds a bottle with 'Drink Me' on the label. I made a rough sketch first,
then I outlined it in black
and then painted the potion in the bottle
in green.
I'm going to add the label in a few seconds.
I'm making a label for the bottle by recycling an old label
and stamping it with my alphabet set.
I'm drawing the table freehand.
I made a sketch test and then copied it onto watercolour paper.
It looks a bit wonky, but I don't think it matters.
Next, I'm adding the watercolours.
The key is a wooden shape that I've bought ready-cut
and I'm just painting it with golden paint.
I always make a rough sketch first
and then copy it onto the watercolour paper before I add the watercolours.
I use the rough sketch as a guide.
I decided to add in a mouse
to create some interest at the front of the page
and also Alice meets a mouse when she's down the rabbit-hole.
When I'd finished painting all the elements, it was time to cut them out
and assemble them all together.
After I'd glued all the pieces in place, I added more details in with a fine
paintbrush and watercolours.
If you remember at the beginning, I used too much water on the background.
So here now that the paints are dry I'm going over the top with another layer.
And you can't really see it anymore.
The final stage was to add
the door by using a hinge
and brads. I'm piercing holes
in the paper and then I'm going to add the brads
and the hinge and then that's the
page finished. If you've enjoyed watching this, please
