Here's a tune,
ladies and gentlemen, that...
I think I introduced him
already.
The drummer, Tom Hambridge.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Now, this particular song...
I was keeping an eye on him,
but every time I had
a conversation with, he had
a pen in his hand.
And while we were talking,
he was writing down notes.
And we was on my tour bus, and I
was telling him about what my
mother and father had told me,
and my grandmothers, everybody.
And every time -- the point I'm
trying to get to -- I was
talking to this young man before
we started working together, he
was noting stuff.
And my mother told me once...
I didn't know what running water
was until I was 17 years old,
and of course, you know I didn't
have electricity.
And she had a broken mirror,
and she was in front of that
mirror, combing her hair.
And I dashed between her.
I must have been nine or ten.
I said, "Mom, I'm good-looking."
And she did not crack a smile.
She said, "Yeah, son, but guess
what -- that's only skin deep."
And I never forgot that.
