The first piece, "Pan", evokes
like all the others
a literary figure or the mythology
that have to do with the flute
"Pan" with his flute Syrinx
title of another piece played tonight
is obviously influenced by Debussy
and Ravel
reminiscent of "Afternoon of a Faun"
and "Daphnis and Chloe"
The French flute, so characteristic
is inspired here by Greek Mythology
The first piece is written in Dorian mode
The second piece, "Tityrus",
which evokes the shepherd of Virgil ("The Eclogues")
is a very spirited piece
one could say that this is the scherzo of this work
very sparkling and full of life.
The third piece is much more introspective
calm, evoking something incantatory
"Krishna", from the Hindu god.
You should know that this is not only an evocation
by a French imagining India.
Roussel went to India in 1906
and was inspired
by a musical mode of northern India
the Shri râga.
The final piece,
"Monsieur De La Péjaudie"
is very satirical.
De La Péjaudie is a character
in a novel by Henri de Regnier
"La Pécheresse" ("The Sinner").
Like him, this piece is whimsical
and full of character
Thank you!
