well over one
becomes or handles desires species that were discovered in two thousand and
eleven
this list was compiled by the in international institute
for species exploration outside arizona state university
what this list does is look pretty fifteen to twenty thousand species that
were discovered last year
better discovered every year should say
and it found ten that were the most stranger unique work bizarre
according to the people here course
and it's a pretty interesting list
and what people realize as we've got about two million are sloops species
cataracts army corps
when it's estimated that there could be between eight and twelve million
there are loads to find out there and these are some of the strangest ones
that were found in twenty one
sort of cuba
so i should mention this list is in no particular order
so we're starting off with the make swimming orchid
or the bolbo phylum nocturne
that's a sad looking flower that was discovered in new britain
in papua new guinea
but what makes it so interesting is the fact that there are twenty five thousand
known species of orchids
and this is the very first one discovered
that blooms at night
it opens up at around ten pm and lasts
for about twelve hours that would serve close
in the next morning
problem with this
flowers though it may be a habitat abreast interlocking practices in new
guinea
and it we may have had just a brief opportunity
setting p
the sky is the wandering lakes off-stage
curry far sim in volumes
that's latin
wandering must like sausage
he's about sixteen centimeters long
and found in the punk or region of tanzania
and he's actually the largest milky within that region
now he's not really the largest in the world that would be
the giant african mill appeared thirty eight centimeters which is more than
twice as long for this one
but this one is
especially
fact he's about one and a half centimetres in diameter
and uh... in imperial that would be
roughly an inch
and it's found specifically in the western
who some bar a mountain forests
often indicate what
now this species is a little
different in that
it's not really that
were rare order i should say it's not that it's
in small abundances just in a very
strange location mrs
gini pulleys autumn papi
me could know psus
ought to not less
what makes it so specials that it
as you may have
been able to tell from its name
it's found in nepal
at an elevation of over ten thousand feet
and diverse is actually discovered way back in nineteen sixty two
by eta storied himalayan plant hunter adam stain tan and then again in
nineteen ninety
for by staff from the university of calculus
they just haven't been
observe a dozen new species
and it was recently rediscovered by team botanists who
went up to nepal troubled miles away from any civilization through monsoon
rains
and they manage to fine piece uh... beautiful ny police often popping xander
quite lovely and it's
great epping about them now
now this is the devils world or the tally sap a little bit snapfish style
the fist obi no sly little reference to
faust and is bargain with missus tel
the reason they're called that is they were discovered at a depth of one point
three kilometers or eight tenths of a mild beneath the earth's surface and
south african gold mine
now these things are about half
a millimeter in length
and because of their depth of they've found to be indeed
deepest leading to rest real multi-site organism on the planet
which is just incredible but temperatures you're surviving in were
about
thirty seven degrees celsius or
ninety eight point six degrees fahrenheit
and carbon dating on the bore hole water which had been sustaining them
showed that these the species have been in touch with the earth's atmosphere for
the last four to six thousand years
and it's really neat
an impressive estimate as to how far life kinhdoanh order to keep on moving
now this thing is actually a fungus
which icing upfront because cut a very confusing name
very amusing and actually it's
the sponge bob square pants mushroom
sports latin name
spongiform up squarepants e
and uh... i am not making that up
researchers are apparently huge in sponge options
but if you look at this one is it really does look like a sponge
even if you look down at the microscopic level
belittle supporters
also kinda look like sponges as well
and also if you were too
squeeze this
fungus and then like uh... leawood
slowly go back to its original shaped the way a sponge often does
now there is a bit of uh... uh...
controversy wendy after straightening their
factor in newly discovered fungus it was
frivolous by the journal editors but
the authors persisted and if they made sure that this new species would be
called the sponge bob square pants mushroom
so my hat's off to
dejar de and p_a_ and burns for sticking to their guns and making sure that
we would have this finkel
a sponge bob square pants mushroom
now this is a deep though nair banded box jelly
somalia
po boy yeah
it's name is actually kind of cute the over boy at parties
represents po boy a which was submitted by a high school biology teacher in a
contest of
which had about three hundred entries
which were submitted a testament of thing
and this jellyfish is
quite tenements and box shaped and it's
incited quite frequently since two thousand one but it hasn't will really
been officially described until two thousand eleven
there is a spokesman caption two dozen turning and it just took a lot of time
to examine it and really
created document that accurately describes it
so while this thing wasn't discovered in twenty eleven
that is what it was officially put on the record so to speak
and we now have the bonier bandit box jelly
now this is the walking practice oredi any attack ad formats
and it was discovered in you know and southwestern china
and what makes this once uh... incredibly unique is that
evolved species on this list its
the only one that currently isn't alive today
this is a false but was discovered about
five hundred and twenty million years ago
and this thing is a
lobo podium
of which there is only one left alive
and those are velvet worms
and it's not that goes
evolved into
arthropods
insects spiders in crustaceans we've
got loads from there the largest group of living animals today
and this
is
apostle of something that could be an important intermediary step between
lobo koreans and arthropods
and it's just
a really important find
and it's
one of
i don't know
one million and counting
samples that proved the theory of evolution
not that we needed anymore but
it's really interesting to see how the smallest reaches out there
have all dispose you know the big ones
now this is a really cool new species it's called
deep reckoned no down
sure got that wrong
co us
most so must send term
probably got that run wrong as well
anticipates our second wasp decreases at about one centimeter above the ground
and what it does that looks for ant
and when it comes to this and it attacks
strikes in about
point zero five two
obsession
and what it does is it
lease these eggs
or it's larva should say into the act
well that's basically it resent it
larva develops within the man eventually have changed
this wasp gets too
continue living
what's so cool is that that
little exchange that quick little stabbed
into the and can be so incredibly quick
and i think we did a picture to try and capture that i don't know how
khadija aunty
does but
you can sort of tell it's pretty quiet
now this thing
kinda freaks me out a little its
suzie mister french blocked or
two moro palmer suzie mine
and this was discovered in
brasil one is named after her
uh... famous soooon brazilian zoologist
doctor i've been says i'm a
and this is
first
blue trench ever discovered it is
probably one of the most distinctively colored
scott that really prayed blue
coloring and it's
kinda freaks me out
uh... for those who don't know the difference between a perodua and uh...
iraq net
tradeshows
primitive i guess
tape of spider in that it houses on the spray whereas
a rack mints spin webs
the main difference between a mother or some other differences as well
i think it makes trenches little scarier of
i'm sure this one is quite harmless eyes
they're not usually so bold as to attack humans
and um... i'm going to vote on quickly
now this is the last species on our top ten list
and it is far and away my favorite
it is the sneezing monkey
or rental pickets
strike kary
missed was discovered in the end marker and it's the first snub nosed monkey
discovered in myanmar
every year there about an average of thirty six new mammals discovered
so
out of the huge list of
twenty thousand or so
it's really a big deal when anew primate spam
and this
little monkey
is already thought to be critically endangered because it's over here
but there is a cute little story and i was discovered
when it rains in the force which have lives and
will uh...
bend over and pockets head between its needs
and the local hunters would instruct the uh...
the botanists who were looking for it
to go out in the rain and listen for the seizing
that's how it got its name and stuff sneezing monkey
and aside from the fact that it's absolutely adorable
i think it's always great when we find and president carter's
that was the last hi hope you enjoyed it
and i'd be super interested to hear what your favorite of the top ten is as well
so income
thanks for watching
