In cultural news, today is the National Day of Sri Lanka, observing its independence gained
in 1948. The origins of Sri Lanka can be traced to the 6th century BCE and is known for preserving
Theravada Buddhism and the creation of a complex system of irrigation. An island country south
of India, Sri Lanka is blessed with an abundance of scenic beauty. Its Sinharaja Forest Reserve
and Central Highlands are United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
World Heritage Sites. Over half the trees in the primary tropical rainforests of the
Sinharaja Forest Reserve are endemic and many are recognized as rare. The Central Highlands
is considered a super biodiversity hotspot with an outstanding range of flora and fauna.
We wish the kind people of Sri Lanka a splendid National Day.
