My name's Lydia Larson, and I live in Portland, Oregon.
I used captions to first learn how to start reading,
and I would watch kids' shows with the captions on.
I was reading books on my own before I even went to kindergarten.
It really helped me build my vocabulary.
I use captioning a lot now.
I use it especially when I'm working out or at the gym or at a restaurant
where they have the TV on but they don't want to turn the sound on.
It's really annoying when captions are bad,
and it's definitely worse than having no captions at all.
If someone's never heard of captions,
I usually tell them that it's a pretty basic part of watching TV.
Most people don't even notice them
because you just see them and don't even think about them
because you don't need them.
If there's just one word that you miss,
sometimes it can change the whole meaning of something.
