[Charlene] My name is Charlene Strong and I am
from Seattle, Washington.
And I currently am the subject
of a documentary film called 'For My Wife.'
The night my partner died I was unable to be with her initially
until a family member out-of-state allowed me
permission to be by her bedside as she lay dying.
When I tried to make her funeral arrangements the same
thing happened.
I was told that I could not make her arrangements for her.
However, they were very happy to take my money to pay
for those arrangements.
A month after her death I chose to testify in Washington state
and we now have landmark legislation
that does protect same-sex couples that are
in committed relationships in Washington state.
I think the 2010 census is a move in the right direction.
I think we are finally realizing that all citizens are Americans
and all citizens need to be counted equally.
