It’s great for me to be back today and to celebrate the incredible impact that our law clinic
has had and is having and the success of the law clinic,
Particularly in helping those in our community, those who are most disadvantaged
We’re back to celebrate that partnership and that success, but to announce the largest gift ever
The largest gift ever
to the University Of Louisville Brandeis School Of Law
A gift of more than 1 million dollars from Sue Ellen Ackerson and her family
to permanently endow the law clinic. So that’s very special.
The clinic served over 600 clients and almost 90% of them are women.
Predominantly, we serve low income victims of domestic violence, and emergency protective order
EPO, hearings in Jefferson Family Court.
The clinic really benefits these victims because we pair them with highly trained student attorneys
who are well prepared to zealously represent them at the hearing.
Throughout law school, the University of Louisville really stresses the importance
to students of using our education and resources to give back to the community
and to improve the community around us.
While representing domestic violence victims, and persons being evicted from their home
I, as a student attorney, was able to take the knowledge that I learned in the law school classroom
and apply that to real world situations
This allowed me a deeper understanding of the very complex issues that are sometimes so hard to grasp
in the classroom, but when you really apply them, then they click.
It’s just so wonderful and such an honor for me and our family to be a part of this
of giving back to the community and offering services with my husband’s name. In memory of my husband
