Let’s do Norse mythology: the days of the week.
A man named Mundilfari had two children, a daughter he named Sól, sun
and a son that he named Máni, moon.
The Gods Odin, Vili and Vé were angered by his arrogance
and they took the children away from him and place them onto the sky.
Sól was set to steer the wagon of the sun and Máni set to steer the wagon the of the moon.
And to keep them from stopping two wolves were set to chase them and to devour them.
These wolves were named Sköll and Hati.
Söndag, Sunday is named after Sól and Måndag, Monday is named after Máni.
Tisdag, Tuesday is named after the God Týr, the bravest God there ever was.
The most famous tale concerning Týr is that of the shackling of the Fenrir wolf.
The gods had again and again tried to tie this beast down but nothing had helped.
Odin lost his patience and he sent Freyr to the dwarwes
to have them create the most powerful chain.
But Fenrir suspected mischief
and demanded that one of the Gods put their hand in his jaw
in case he wouldn't get loose. Fenrir fought harder and harder
and the chain got stronger and stronger and when Fenrir realized that it
wouldn't get loose, he bit Týr’s hand off. The Gods rejoiced at their success.
Well, everybody except Týr.
Onsdag, Wednesday is named after the mightiest of all Gods; Odin
and he carried many names such as Oden, Wôdan, Wôtan
All father, Army father, Fjölner, Grimner, Raven God, Victory father.
But more about Odin in future episodes.
Torsdag, Thursday is named after Thor the mighty champion and
defender of Asgard but also protector of humans. He carries a mighty hammer
called Mjölnir which was given to him by the dwarf Brokkr.
More about Thor in future episodes.
Fredag, Friday is name either after Freyer, Freyja or ***.
Freyer and Freyja were siblings of the vanir race. *** was one of Odin’s wives.
And finally Lördag, Saturday which has no connection at all to Norse mythology
because Lördag comes from the Swedish word Lögaredagen, which simply means laundry day.
That was the third episode of my Norse mythology series.
