Dr. Poff gave us some insights into the relationship between aquatic habitats and flow regime,
pointing out that water managers can adjust releases of flow to help match the needs of the
aquatic ecosystems. In the next lecture, by Dr. Brian Bledsoe, we'll look at a variety of
other techniques that can be used to restore the ecological integrity of streams, riparian
zones, and wetlands that have been altered from their natural condition. We will see
that, in addition to providing a more natural flow regime, restoration can be enhanced by
providing a more natural channel configuration, connections between the channel and the flood
plain, water quality suitable for the habitat, and a sediment regime appropriate for that
system. Most of all, we will see that stream and wetland restoration depends on restoring
processes even more than restoring a physical structure.
